Although he met resistance from ‘Spaniards who had lived longest in the country, who declared that the country was thoroughly explored and that there was nothing else to explore in it’, Gómez Pérez was determined to send an expedition to Tuy. Perhaps these objectors were the same ‘older residents of Manila’ who had reported that ‘the valley was fertile and the climate mild’. 1 When the expedition had been completed the governor would again be criticized (see below, p. 99).
