ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a brief history of astrology up to the first and second centuries AD. It focuses on the manner in which the different uses of astrology directly paralleled the roles of Delphic oracles, something which demonstrates the overlap of the two divinatory methods. The clearest parallel between oracles and catarchic astrology is seen from the foundation of cities. Astrology used mathematical calculations and astute observations to interpret Fate and, in this way, it was more reliable than the ambiguous traditional oracles. Interrogatory astrology gave answers to various questions with reference to celestial construction. Genethlialogy, the most dominant form of Greek astrology, was common throughout the Roman Empire. Finally, after analyzing the different types of astrology, and the parallels seen at Delphi, the chapter provides an explanation to help explain why people consulted astrologers whereas in the past they may have consulted the oracle at Delphi.
