ABSTRACT

Introduction An ecosocial transition is an answer to the current multiple crisis in society, understood as a crisis of the society model in all its dimensions. This challenge involves a change of society’s fundamental principles. This ‘paradigm shift’ has been mainly conceptualized concerning the relationship between the social and ecological dimension (Peeters 2012). The ongoing economic crisis, understood as a crisis of the capitalist system as such, makes it necessary to continue the conceptual research for the economic dimension (Peeters 2015). As argued by Tuula Helne and Tuuli Hirvillammi in Chapter 3 in this book, this concerns the need for an economy which produces prosperity without too much pressure on natural resources, finally without growth. A basic question for social work and social policy then is whether there are economic alternatives for the current pressure on public services that respond also to the social and environmental challenges.
