ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the eight cases on the basis of the nine variables one outcome variable and eight condition variables. The eight European Union (EU) decision-making processes will be presented with a twofold objective. The case studies provide insights in the EU decision-making processes with regard to international negotiations leading to multilateral environmental agreements (MEA). The chapter develops an intimacy with each of the cases, to gain a deep, thick understanding of each case. This is a requisite starting point for a Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) procedure. Quotations of member state or Commission officials, which originate from interviews, are used to illustrate the case descriptions. At the end of this chapter, the findings are presented, which makes it possible to compare the different variables of the eight cases in a systematic way. On the basis of this comparison, each variable will be recoded into a binary value to execute the QCA procedure.
