ABSTRACT

This chapter portrays the logic of European discourse on the use of military force as an interplay between compelling European myths and intrusive events of the outside world. Its main goal is to run through the development of the main narrative of the book. This will be followed by a sketch of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) discursive landscape, accompanied by a few observations on this chapter's contribution to the scholarly debate on the European strategic culture. Thus, even in the face of all the recent pessimism and criticism regarding Europe's security policies, a creative reading and alternative interpretation of the CSDP is possible. The European Union (EU) and the CSDP can and should be a force for the good, for both European and global security.
