ABSTRACT

Carol has had considerable experience teaching children with a range of needs, and has also been actively involved in writing and publishing resources for educators and in delivering workshops for teachers. This chapter explores carol's story which is concerned with issues of racism, migration and displacement. Carol added that children need to learn how to back up their thinking, in order that it will be accepted by others. Critical literacy is one key way to teach children and support them in developing a critical language to back up what they are thinking and feeling, and why. Carol was an activist teacher, in terms of challenging her colleagues' perceptions about children. Children can be encouraged to bring artefacts into the classroom to support their storytelling about their own families and their experiences outside of school. The critical aspect of such practice is the connection to children's authentic literacies, the language and social practices they engage in.
