ABSTRACT

Innovation and novelty comes from the same Latin root. They both imply that something is new. The Oxford English Dictionary (1971) explains innovation as 'the introduction of novelties'. The innovations chosen to appear in these pages have nationwide impact. They have application across a range of grade and subject levels. The theories of Karl Marx were tried out on about half the world's population under the name of Communism, and they still prevail in one form or another in certain countries. Efficacious outcomes for cooperative learning were increasingly reported at professional meetings and in research in education journals throughout the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and continuing today. Lewin had developed an idea called field theory, which said in essence that a group is actually a dynamic whole rather than a mere collection of individuals. In time educational researchers began to show interest in the theory of social interdependence.
