ABSTRACT

Introduction: what are the sources of the UK Constitution? In Chapter 1, you were introduced to the general principles of what makes up a constitution. You will be aware that these generally form a document that sets out the distribution of powers between, and the principal functions of, a state’s organs of Government. You learnt that codified constitutions include a list of the rights which people living in the state enjoy, for example s 1 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa of 1996 includes ‘values’ such as human dignity, equality, advancement of human rights and freedoms; the Rule of Law as being supreme and that all adults are able to vote in regular and free elections.
