Music video aesthetics across media
This chapter presents some basic arguments for the probability of music video influences while admitting that it is indeed difficult to move beyond the level of mere assumption when it comes to tracing the influence one medium has upon another. It focuses on the influence of music video in cinematic media-tracing the "musicalization of vision" and the transformation of the moving image, particularly in the shape of "MTV aesthetics" and "musical moments". The chapter also presents the opposite move of exploring the influence of music video in popular music—tracing the "visualization of music" and the visual transformation of both "recorded" and "live" musical sounds. Finally, it suggests that certain characteristics of music video aesthetics have been remediated in new digital media in general—among other things, the fundamental audiovisuality, the tendency towards image modulation and multiplication, and the hybrid spaces and impossible times.
