ABSTRACT

The Supply of Machinery Regulations 2008, as amended by the Supply of Machinery Regulations 2011, transpose into UK law the Machinery Directive and came into effect on 29 December 2009. At the time of writing this text in late July 2016, there is considerable uncertainty about the future of European-derived legislation, but what can be said with certainty is that the scale of the challenge in deciding what to do, what to repeal, what to replace and what to amend will be enormous. Legislation enacted in recent years to transpose into UK law the provisions of European directives has had a major impact on Great Britain and Northern Ireland's health and safety systems. Whilst only the Electrical Equipment Regulations are targeted specifically and uniquely at electrical safety, many of the directives have requirements that have an influence on electrical safety, including the safety of electrotechnical control systems and the prevention of electrical ignition of explosive atmospheres.
