ABSTRACT

Despite frequent criticisms that the EU runs a vast bureaucracy, its pay-roll is modest compared with the national civil services of the member states. The European Commission has fewer than 25,000 employees, including about 5,000 in scientific research institutes or other specialised agencies. The remaining EU institutions together employ about half that number. The breakdown across the institutions in 2015 is shown in Table 14.1.
