ABSTRACT

Applying the appraisal framework from Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), the aim of this article is to analyse the values of “international mindedness” in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in Chinese second language classrooms in Hong Kong international school. The IB programme promotes international mindedness in education and it is of great interest to see how students develop international mindedness in second language Chinese classrooms in Hong Kong. The research question is “How do the students of Chinese demonstrate concepts related to international mindedness in class work in the teaching and learning cycle?” I applied appraisal theory Martin and White (2005) to analyse two student texts. The findings show students making moral judgement on international mindedness, global citizenship, human rights, intercultural understanding and applying interdisciplinary knowledge of global issues. This study will contribute to Chinese language education using Systemic Functional Linguistics in IB curriculum development and teacher training in language education.
