ABSTRACT

Th is dimension of culture deals with beliefs about whether individuals have control over results or external factors have an impact on results. People with an internal control orientation have a cando attitude and believe that concerted eff ort and application of their knowledge and skills will enable them to deal with issues and to produce the desired results. Countries with internal control orientations are mostly North American and Western European, and the people there believe that nature can be controlled by human eff ort. People with an external control orientation tend to believe that things outside their control will have a signifi cant impact on what they are able to accomplish, and they believe that human actions must be in harmony with nature. Countries with external control orientations are mostly Asian, Eastern European and Middle Eastern. Th ere is also a tendency to believe that luck has a lot to do with results in some Asian cultures. On the other hand, lucky Americans are inclined to attribute success to their own eff orts.
