ABSTRACT

Ideological formations erode possibilities for inter-subjectivity and the development of solidarity for effective action. Psychological separation and individuation, of course, begin on the basis of this sort of fusion, but de-ideologization depends on a transcendence of primitive fusion, mimesis and symbiosis. To ground adequately a project of social transformation, we must insist on the possibility of meaningful improvements at the individual, group and societal levels as well as the possibility of collectively determining what these improvements should be and how to implement them. From the psychological perspective, it clearly ignores the role of personality structures and styles that routinely sabotage purely educational efforts to help people transcend ideological states. An ideological dimension was apparent in the ways individuals went about resolving the dilemmas that set up transformations of their life structures. In an ideological formation, in contrast to the neurotic relationship, the other also functions in one way or another from an idealized position.
