ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how culture influences words. Culture shapes vocabulary. A country's vocabulary often reflects the variety and development of the most consumed food. Germany is one of the largest consumers of beer in the world. In Korean, there is a word for kimchi-making: kimjang. This word is now in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Cultural differences inevitably produce untranslatable words. Cultural awareness is an important factor in importing foreign words. More and more words from the Source Language (SL) enter into lexicon of Target Language (TL) as cultural awareness of SL and its culture grows. Shingsungsaengsunghada is often used to describe a state of experiencing a variety of emotions simultaneously, both up and down, sometimes leaving the individual restless or fidgety. Tangsin can be used to refer to the second person. It can be used by a couple when one wants to show his or her respect towards their spouse.
