ABSTRACT

In a small theatre, whether operated by a producer or run by a house manager, one person may combine the duties of security, custodian, box office ticket seller, usher, and maintenance individual. Dialogue between the production manager, the house manager, and fire department can begin as early as final designs and construction plans are approved by the production manager and/or technical director. In preparation for the load-in, house crew heads would hire any additional stagehands as needed. Being among the first front-of-house (FOH) staff to converse with potential audience members, box office personnel might possibly benefit the most from reading the script. Box office personnel have little interaction with the actual production beyond selling tickets and dispensing house seats or complimentary seats. The front-of-house personnel that are most visible to an audience are the ushers. Ushers directly report to the house manager, who not only schedules their hours but also assigns them their stations in a theatre.
