ABSTRACT

The common vision that the hired director has struck with the producer and playwright is a result of repeated readings of the work. With licensing rights to the play and/or musical secured by the producing team, it is time to bring on board the creative team that will breathe life into the product. Within a non-musical production it is somewhat safe to say that the major creative energy emanates from the playwright and director. The shared driving force becomes even more divided on a musical with the creative musical triumvirate of the librettist, composer, and lyricist. A major consideration for the director and other creative team members is who will be cast as the various characters in a play or musical. The rehearsal processes for non-musicals and musicals differ considerably in their very nature and number of personnel involved. Rehearsals are a period of exploration between creative team members and performers.
