ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at two of the more common ancillary design groups: properties, which falls under the aegis of the scenic designer; and a host of contributors to costume design. As the scale of production increases, more likely there is a prop designer as well as subsidiary designers. Arguably, when watching a production the primary focus is on the actors; thus the work of the costume designer receives much scrutiny from the viewing public. The makeup designer will be able to create with the actor a series of instructive photographs or sketches for each stage of makeup application, as well as advise on which products are cosmetically safe. Continuing the practice of assistant scenic designers, assistant lighting designers similarly are responsible for tracking changes in rehearsals; assisting in the preparation of a lighting plot; preparing schedules; and coordinating bids and equipment orders with rental supply shops.
