ABSTRACT

The Earth Charter is an international declaration of fundamental values and principles for building a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society in the twenty-first century. The moral-cultural system comprises the principles of democracy, the virtues of citizens in democratic participation, and a set of individual virtues. Democratic capitalism is a variation of a capitalist market economic system that is based upon the principles of democracy, particularly the principles of equality of opportunity and social justice. The capitalist economic system is subordinate to the political regime in the sense that it was instrumental for achieving the regime purpose which was the common good. Private firms are organized for producing goods and services and distributing and selling them in exchange for money with the purpose of making a profit. Markets are places where commodities are exchanged for money. Governments control the money supply, interest rates and rates of inflation through the policies of central banks that intervene in money and capital markets.
