ABSTRACT

This chapter adopts a gender and sexuality inclusive approach in order to examine domestic and family violence (DFV) prevention approaches with a focus on proactive measures. It explores the problem of DFV before exploring a range of DFV proactive prevention measures, including new and innovative techniques such as infotainment. The chapter advocates that proactive prevention can be used to not only extend the practice of victim safety, but to act as an early intervention strategy through raising awareness of this form of violence. The efficacy of the scheme has been questioned by Women’s Aid, UK who has raised concern over the low take up rate of the scheme, signalling a poor impact on improving victim safety, while Refuge UK has raised concern that the scheme promotes victim blaming. Reactive measures can include separating the victim and the perpetrator and shared risk assessment practices between agencies to prevent further violence.
