ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the role of the Leipzig industry in the creation of fur farming in the interwar period. It emphasizes the alternative ways in which the district organized research on fur breeding and whether it was able to implement the findings of such research into the sourcing of new resources. The chapter explains a pioneering contribution to the history of modern fur farming. It contributes to the historical understanding of one of the most controversial farming niches in contemporary society. Before turning to the developments in Germany, let us take a closer look at the emergence of fur farming as an international phenomenon. The main activities of the Reichszentrale were the promotion of research into differing aspects of fur breeding and encouraging professionalisation among the numerous new amateur farmers. In spite of domestic problems like speculation and the focus on foreign investments, fur farming in Germany grew spectacularly by the end of the 1920.
