ABSTRACT

A theory or explanation is in a sense an interpretation that has or seeks total dominion over people and the physical world. It demands that there be no alternative. That total dominion is achieved through an analytics that knots categories of the real, practices and resources into a sensual seamless reality. The work of writing involves inscribing the multiple truths and reals that people express as 'their life', 'their complaints', 'their injuries', 'their hopes', 'their demands', 'their interests'. The writing project becomes a textual space for making public the range of storied explanations including the rationale of its own textual production. Writing ethnographies as systems or as organisations, or at least fleeting arrangements of powers where people are directed towards each other in amity or enmity, focuses attention on the constant creation of the social and all its forms by people acting with or against each other.
