ABSTRACT

The chapter focuses on groups who directly rescue animals from places of abuse, or cause economic sabotage to companies who profit from animal abuse. Since the 1970s, the animal liberation movement grew to become one of the most significant social movements in Western Europe and North America, inspired new generations of environmental and anti-capitalist activists, and suffered severe and international state repression. While the movement remains dogged with accusations that it represents privileged white and middle-class concerns, new strands of activism employ concepts such as total liberation and intersectionality to tie into wider social struggles
