ABSTRACT

Efforts to increase the rigor of schools and classrooms are only successful when they have widespread support and ownership. They aren't as successful when the principal or central office mandates rigor. Consensus is often the preferred way to make decisions, but consensus can often be fleeting. Beyond a general vision of the school, it is important to develop a shared vision to creating a more rigorous school. It is essential that teachers and leaders possess a clear and compelling personal vision, but personal vision alone is not sufficient. Effective leaders recognize the importance of working with staff and community to develop, nurture, and sustain a strong, collectively held vision for their more rigorous school. A clear vision, and the shared commitment to its success, is one of the most important characteristics of an effective school.
