ABSTRACT

Accountability is much more than issuing mandates and holding people accountable. The most successful school leaders understand that it involves energizing and motivating individuals and groups. Shared accountability doesn't just happen. It must be an integral part of your planning at every stage. Beyond providing professional development, it is also critical that you assure accountability for the use of professional development. It is also important that families are provided with the information and tools they need to support your vision of a more rigorous school. Students also share accountability for their own learning. Too often they are not included in efforts to increase rigor. There has been a significant shift in accountability in schools. The focus is clearly on the collective accountability of teachers and administrators for the success of every student. Teachers and other staff are responsible for delivering instruction and positively impacting every student's learning.
