ABSTRACT
The Affective Turn occurred across a range of disciplines from the late 1990s. This chapter presents a brief critique of representational thinking before a detailed discussion about non-representational theories, and the theorisation of emotions and affect. With a more-than-human lens, the main contributions of non-representational and affective approaches are to bring attention to: human–non-human relations, precognitive affects and emotions, and consideration of nonlinear and emergent phenomena. These ideas help to shift thinking about cities, and how the effects or impacts of change might be differently understood and experienced.
