ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the relation of the competition state to education and learning. One of the most important means of promoting national competitiveness is that as many as possible are educated to the highest level possible. Basically, this is a matter of the exploitation by the competition state of people’s fantastic possibilities for learning. There is a lack of understanding of the importance of learning that has to do with personal development and the development of identity. The understanding of learning has been erroneous in the sense that although general formulations have expressed a broad learning concept including both acquisition of knowledge and personal development, practice and, in particular, tests and measurements have largely emphasized standards. The chapter examines the present situation in the Danish education system and presents some deliberations that concern where and how improvements can be made in the short and the long term.
