ABSTRACT

Clothing and other appearance-objects, including hairstyles, make-up, accessories and facial and bodily characteristics, allow us to interpret abstract social processes such as understanding how people relate to each other. Recently, street fashion has led the way with wealthy people adopting the style of the lower classes. Colour is an important feature of fashion. Black is one of fashionistas' most favoured colours for clothing, yet there is little empirical evidence about the reasons we wear black other than the finding that wearing red or black results in a person being judged as more attractive. An interest in the relationship between clothing and mood was heightened with the release of the Hollywood blockbuster La La Land. In the wake of the film's success the stores filled with yellow clothing; consumers were told that wearing yellow would make them happy.
