ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book demonstrates that zero carbon design is quite possible today, using existing dynamic simulation models as design tools. It shows that the zero carbon design of new and retrofit buildings is perfectly possible and economically viable today but there are a lack of skills to deliver it and a lack of general awareness of its long-term benefits to stimulate wider demand. The book therefore considers cutting-edge research, education and training on a large scale to be the key catalysts for changing our ways and securing a brighter future for our planet. It explores the notion of closed economic circuits, a balanced economy and complementary currencies, and discusses natural resources such as solar radiation driving such currencies. The book discusses long-term problems of population growth, climate change and resource constraints will all reach a critical stage in 2050.
