ABSTRACT

The following three chapters tell the stories of patients I have met in the most recent ten years of my practice, all from a specific perspective: their problems with separation-individuation in adult life. It is interesting to keep in mind, as Bergman and Harpaz-Rotem (2004) remind us, that in terms of the infant-mother dyad, Mahler felt strongly that the infant had to carry the lion’s share in the process of development. This chapter introduces the reader to detailed therapeutic work with two individuals, in particular, who will be followed throughout the course of the book.
