ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a story passed on at various meetings associated with intercultural trainers. The trainers talks about three different applications of intercultural communication. They begin with a discussion of environmental communication and how it both informs and informed by considerations of culture. The trainers then discuss intercultural applications in health and medicine. They discuss leadership is the final area of applied cultural communication. They include explicit leadership approaches that are mentioned in the sections on environment and health. The trainers look at how the culture impacts communication in three applied contexts, including environmental communication, healthcare, and leadership within organizational settings. Specifically, they look at how communication serves as a resource for mediating relations between humans and nature. They also looked at some cultural approaches to the study and practice of environmental communication. The trainers then took a very specific industry, the healthcare industry, and examined how intercultural communication impacts work in this context.
