ABSTRACT

Indians on horseback in feathered headdresses form the most popular image of native North Americans. However, this image was typical only of Plains (sometimes called the Great Plains) groups, and only within the past several hundred years. This simplistic view of Plains men is reinforced by the well-known military resistance of the Plains groups and of subsequent public interest (e.g., Hollywood movies) in that aspect of Plains culture. In reality, Plains cultures and peoples were varied and complex.
