ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces thinking behind the concept on the practical application of climate compatible development (CCD) approaches and its relationship to similar concepts and approaches. It identifies key themes and concerns arising from literature on mitigation and adaptation from a development perspective and then reflects on key themes within writing and practice in international development. Common themes in the literature on mitigation, adaptation and development can inform the generation of principles for CCD. Transformation is a recurring theme in mitigation, adaptation and development. Adaptation calls for transformation in social, political and economic systems, reflecting the scale and nature of environmental change. The chapter draws on initial applications of CCD to identify key themes and issues, providing an overall introduction to the case study chapters. It concludes by explaining the rationale and structure of the book, providing a brief overview of each contribution.
