ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the role of leadership in the change process surrounding the implementation of e-learning at one Saudi Arabian university as a change from previous practices forms the site and context. The higher education sector in Saudi Arabia has undergone tremendous development in the last 10 years. The chapter draws on a PhD study that was conducted between 2009 and 2013 in an Australian university. The data presented in the chapter were collected from a Saudi Arabian university. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) that are already familiar components in business environments are finding their way into education at all levels in many parts of the world. Such technologies, however, disrupt education as they require changes in the teaching approaches and structure of institutions. The e-learning initiatives in Saudi higher education, which included the establishment of the National Centre for e-Learning and Distance Learning and e-learning Deanships in almost all Saudi universities.
