The fact that the past literature focused mainly on practical aspects of notetaking is quite understandable, considering the nature of the topic. However, these practice-oriented “know-hows” are largely based on the respective author’s personal experience and intuition as to what interpreters’ notes should be without any theoretically sound ground on which to build their arguments. 2 As a result, their recommendations and opinions remain personal and often contradict each other (Dam, 2004), making it rather diffi cult for students of interpreting to follow despite the good intention of the authors.
