ABSTRACT

This chapter develops a new paradigm of true security. Drawing on the dangers of historical Security stories in ancient feudal and current capitalist societies, it shows that we need to craft a paradigm that focuses on the authentic security needs of the population rather than the aims of elites to preserve power and profit. Moving beyond the ancient elite Security stories of rulers, we show that militarized capitalism must be transformed to an egalitarian democratic political and economic order, in which the genuine social needs and rights of the population are enshrined in a new social democratic order. It ensures true security: rights to safety, loving connections, shelter, health care, education, jobs and livable wages, and communities of work, family and accountable governance. Beyond the transformation of our domestic society toward a form of a socially just or democratic socialist system, we describe the move toward a world order based on collective security and principles of subsidiarity and democracy, ensuring that power and security arrangements are transferred to the people at the local, national and international level. The principles of true security prioritize people over profit, democracy over autocracy and peace over war. They renounce the upstairs/downstairs architecture to ensure economic and social well-being to all citizens.
