ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a case study based in a college of further education (FE) and explores the impact of a peer review strategy into which the principles of coaching have been embedded and which is supported by a framework of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). It explores the concept of observation and peer observation, discussing the characteristics of different approaches and identifying the advantages and disadvantages and impact on professional development. Analysis of coaching as a key strategic initiative and the consequent impact on organisational culture and approaches to professional development clarifies the rationale for the scheme. A brief reflection on the historical perspective of observation within the college contextualises the case study and is substantiated by consideration of the contribution made by PLCs and coaching frameworks to effective implementation of peer review. The chapter concludes by reflecting on the impact of the peer review process and proposes ways in which to shape future developments.
