ABSTRACT

Building on the critical appreciation offered of both criminology and victimology when viewed through a gendered lens discussed in chapters one and two, this chapter deepens the extent to which gender is embedded in each of these areas of investigation by interrogating three key concepts further - fear, risk and security. Each of these concepts has informed the development of criminology and victimology in different ways and here they are examined in relation to their gendered assumptions. This examination leads to an appreciation of two further ideas connected with and developed from these concepts, namely responsibilisation and vulnerability. The chapter closes by offering a critical appreciation of these ideas as they are used to inform criminal justice policy.
