ABSTRACT

Eight case studies are presented. Mr. E drew his self-portraits with a fragmented and disorganised body, but he also drew a human figure with a well-preserved body structure, despite left hemineglect. Mr. U never spoke of his left hemineglect in terms of unilateral problems, but as having “holes in his body” and having lost the armour “that protects the Ego”. In both patients, oral concerns were manifest. Two other cases show the co-occurrence of asomatognosia and of the undue appearance of the oral object. Four women spoke of their paralysed hand as their “daughter”, with self-portraits exhibiting signs of the presence of this daughter in two of the cases.
