ABSTRACT

The attention given to Muslims in the media has raised interest in the role of honor and culture, and how they are intertwined with concepts such as gender, family, and religious dynamics. Honor killings are executed in several parts of the world for a wide range of offenses, including marital infidelity, premarital sex, flirting, and divorce. While speaking to Muslim-American women, honor was colored in different shades, shedding light on the many definitions that honor holds amongst families involving religion, culture, and tradition. The slaying is not committed out of hatred, for greed, or for money, but yet, to restore honor to the family—to right some wrong that the young girl committed. While the women themselves have not experienced honor crimes or killings directly, the interviews opened up larger insights about honor, culture, and abuses of power.
