ABSTRACT

Societies where education is limited to specific groups of people, determined by gender, race, or status, place large subsections of their communities at risk and keep them in a very vulnerable situation. Education can involve everything from increasing general access to schools for girls and women, to a broader type of education about the practices of honor killings, and even perhaps alternate definitions of honor, or ways to restore honor without violence and bloodshed while preserving cultural integrity. The general theme was that education is a necessity in trying to stop the act of honor crimes and killings. No specific plan was put forth or evident to address the inherent obstacles to providing education to groups of people who may not welcome the new approaches. Without education, the power structure is predetermined, and women typically do not have the opportunity to voice their opinions, let alone to take action or fight back against injustices.
