ABSTRACT

The concept of "honor" has different meanings to different people, and the meaning tends to vary greatly depending on one's upbringing and cultural influences. Most commonly, the majority of women reported the term "honor" was not used, rather they chose to use the words "respect" or "izaath" in place of "honor." Earning and gaining respect became a theme that emerged when asked how one could lose honor and then asked if it is able to be regained. Men and women are both responsible for behaving in a respectable manner and upholding their family name in communities labeled as honor societies. The masculine honor code can be described as the push for male responsibility for ensuring the family's well-being, its reputation, consistent authority over the family, and virility. Male honor is determined by actions, including personal achievements, academics, courage, generosity, keeping his promises, and his social standing.
