ABSTRACT
Researching the history of religion in the early modern period is like catching fireflies. Our subject is manifestly everywhere, but it dances out of reach. When we see patterns, it is hard to make out what is real and what a trick of the light. And if we succeed in grasping it, what we find in our hands bears little relation to the living experience. Altogether it is a frustrating, tantalizing and fascinating business.
