ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how our personality affects our online behavior. It then focuses on the extent to which we use the Internet as an environment to express our uninhibited needs, and explores the realm of online therapy (e-therapy). The chapter discusses what kind of personalities gain most from the Internet, and the relevance of some leading personality theories in psychology to the Internet. Sigmund Freud is considered to be the founder of modern psychology. Freud presents the human personality as composed of three parts: the id, the ego, and the superego. In the offline world, many people are frightened of signing on for therapy because of the social stigma surrounding mental health issues. Online therapy has proved successful in treating a variety of problems, ranging from eating disorders, depression, and addictions to various forms of anxiety that harm a person's functioning by generating tension and unease.
