ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the European Union (EU) information systems and databases that fall under the 'internal' dimension of the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (AFSJ). Many of the measures the EU has adopted consist of the processing and sharing of data among law enforcement authorities. The book aims to achieve a fully-fledged analysis of the existing EU frameworks for data-sharing for law enforcement purposes within the EU and between the EU and third countries, the data protection challenges to which these give rise, and possible responses to those challenges at both the EU and global levels. Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) measures are only considered to the extent that they are adjacent to law enforcement. The normative approach focuses on the issues to be considered for the establishment of global data protection standards in the field of security.
