ABSTRACT

The real existence of cross-border areas is not determined merely by the potentials of borderland regions described as a set of diverse features. The areas exist due to multiple links beyond borders, the intensity and character of which are obviously dependent on the aforementioned potentials. Therefore, the purpose of this chapter is to analyse the Polish-Ukrainian borderland in terms of cross-border cooperation on environmental protection, the development of border infrastructure and transport accessibility, border traffi c, social relations, labour and student migration, economic relations including local borderland trade, foreign trade between border regions, tourist traffi c and institutional cooperation: bilateral between regional and local authorities, euro-regional and partnerships arising through the implementation of cross-border projects.
