ABSTRACT

The global expansion of the organic movement also opened up opportunities for Southern agricultural producers to find new markets in the North for the products they cultivated. Monitoring reports issued by FLO (2013, 2014a) provide an outline of the development of Fair Trade in Asia. India is Asia's largest supplier of Fairtrade producers within both categories of organizations, comprising small farmers and hired labor respectively. Organic agriculture still constitutes a minor component of agricultural production in Asia. The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has characterized organic agriculture in Asia as being "very much a smallholder-oriented endeavor". Whereas preceding studies have revealed some contradictions embedded in each of the Fair Trade and organic agriculture initiatives, further contradictions or tensions can be observed when organic agriculture is combined with the Fair Trade initiative. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
