ABSTRACT

To most Americans, health is a high priority, if not their highest personal concern. This chapter explains the current state of health care and the challenges facing all sectors of the health care industry in the United States—patients, medical professionals, hospitals, and insurance companies. It discusses the various policy options designed to address health care and health care reform. The chapter examines the disagreements over the extent that government should become involved in dealing with health care and health care reform. Although the United States spends a substantial portion of its national wealth on health care, millions of Americans are without health benefits. As the stand-off between the Freedom Caucus and moderates within the Republican House membership continued and became more caustic, public opinion showed heightened support for Obamacare and skepticism that the Republican plan would improve health care and access to health care.
