ABSTRACT

New York Collective of Radical Educators (NYCoRE) has two racial affinity groups, the Educators of Color Group (EoC) and the Antiracist White Educators Group (AWE-G), which provide space for teachers of Color and White teachers, respectively, to separately address their needs as teachers committed to racial justice. This chapter outlines some of the practices of each group and discusses how the two have collaborated. It presents the groups' mission statements, and also discusses the ways in which each enacts its particular vision. EoC serves as a place of guidance and support for situations that arise in our educational settings since our schools do not have the support system or ability to address these needs. The ability of EoC members to stay in and fight for change in hostile educational environments, and of AWE-G members to engage in race dialogue without centering whiteness in a race-ignorant school system is because of the work that takes place within the affinity groups.
