ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book brings together major contributions to the study of labour and inflation. With work behaviour and labour efficiency problems, for instance absenteeism, it depends on evaluations of the perceived effects and on management's definition. The search for a solution is place and time dependent and must be evaluated in terms of the unique historical situation in which the decision has to be taken. The management concerned could learn something from its past experience as well as that of others, for instance, by identifying factors which hampered or fostered the effectiveness of a particular payment scheme and drawing up a balance sheet of plus and minus factors. The important pre-requisite for understanding economic and labour problems to take account of people's perceptions of the economic situation, and of their work situation and role in it.
